Art and design dealer Helle Thygesen

I am most happy to introduce guest blogger art and design dealer Helle Thygesen. I have known Helle since childhood and her taste is as exquisite as her fine and delicate being. Thank you for your inspiration Helle, I love your choices.  -Emilie

Helle Thygesen has been running an online gallery hellethygesen.com since 2015. Helle holds a Bachelor’s degree in art history and worked at the Copenhagen gallery The Apartment from 2012-2014. Helle’s interest in art and all things beautiful goes back generations, beginning with her great-grandfather, renowned sculptor Einar Utzon-Frank’s vast collection of art and antiques. Her father ran the Copenhagen auction house Kunsthallen, and today Helle presents a handpicked selection of beautiful objects for your walls, rooted in an eclectic aesthetic and a personal approach – available online.

Helle has selected 9 works of art and design that continue to inspire her:

Enric Cormenzana lithograph. Edition of 99, 1979. This was one of the first works I sold when I opened my gallery. I always have clients asking for it and luckily I have managed to source a few.

Victor Brauner, oil on canvas, 1961. I keep coming back to Victor Brauner’s surrealist images. Luckily, I am able to source rare Brauner prints and vintage posters from time to time, his paintings and drawings sell for astronomical sums at auction.

Leonora Hamill, Painting I Warsaw, 2009. C-type analogue print. From the series ”Art in Progress”, which focuses in art school studios across the world. I dreamt about buying it for 2 years, before finally securing the last one in this size from the edition of 5. One of my absolute favourites from my own collection.

Pol Chambost ceramic tulipière, 1964. In my opinion, one of the finest works from the French ceramicist. It looks fantastic and just the right amount of decadent with tulips peeping out of the ”mouths”.

Log cabin quilt. Early 20th century, USA. I have a very soft spot for antique and 20th century textiles, and this quilt has a particularly beautiful pattern and colours.

Kaare Klint ”Games Table for a Lady”, 1940’s. Elegant design and amazing craftsmanship.

Tina Barney, Mr. And Mrs. Castelli, 1998. What I love about art is – among many other aspects – how it quickly becomes an obsession. This work by Tina Barney has been on my mind for years. The composition, the colours, the atmosphere it conveys – I am crazy about it.

Custommade pillows. I discovered Helen Cormacks beautiful textiles by chance, and I am thrilled to be able to sell pillows in her beautiful design. She creates the most beautiful prints, all edited from her private compilation of antique documents dating from the early 19th century.

Jos Devriendt, Mushroom lamp, 2014. The sculptor Jos Devriendt makes ceramic lamps that are works of art.  The shapes, the glazes, the effect of the light are stunning. Always on my wish list.
